Chronic kidney disease (CKD), while common in America (over 660,000 have kidney failure), is not unique to the US. It is a human condition and affects millions all over the world. • In 2009 and 2010, diabetes was the primary cause of ESRD in 51 - 63% of patients in Mexico, Singapore, Malaysia, and New Zealand
• Taiwan and Japan reported the highest rates of ESRD in 2010, followed by the US
• Worldwide ESRD rates increase 5-7% each year

The prevalence of ESRD and CKD worldwide is quite staggering. They occupy a large portion of government healthcare budgets and funds in many countries. The international community continues to research and develop treatment methods to try to quell this international health crisis.
